My great great grand pappy was a 125th Vet

Howdy, Wish I could meet you folks. My great great grandfather was in Company I of the 125th. His name was Gustav Seydler. My mother has a gold band that went around his hat. The hat, I suppose is long gone. Our reach into the stories of his life is a bit thin. After the war he opened a cigar shop in Chicago. He had a war wound in his leg that bothered him all his life. The bullet, or shrapnel, hit a shoe polishing kit. The kit saved his leg from greater damage. It was thought that he participated in Sherman's march to the sea. We had always thought that he part of an all German group during the war. That's it in a nutshell.

Riverfest

I know you haven't seen much of me this year but it is time for Riverfest (the largest gathering of the blue and grey since....whenever). If anyone would be interested in doing a fun living history (if you ever attended you know what I mean), please let me know. It is the last weekend of September in Canton, GA. the 26th and 27th. It just doesn't get any better than RIVERFEST!!!!

Kristen and I would like to announce the arrival of our little girl. Caleigh Elizabeth Cooper graced us with her presence last night, 9/9/09, at 5:23 p.m. She weighed 7.4 lbs and is 20.5 inches long. Baby and mother are doing well. We should get to go home Friday. Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers.

Battle of Atlanta, what a great job!

I must say, in my short tenure in the 125th (going on 3 years now) I have certainly seen Atlanta evolve into a magnificent event. I believe that a sincere thanks is in order to Earl for putting so much work into this event, and really leaving those who partook in the event with fond memories. Also I would like to personally thank everyone who went out to the wrk days in did so much imporovement on the property, as i was "unable" (cough, cough) to make it to any of the work days.

Thanks you all, as this has certainly been my favorite event so far of the 2009 season, and will be a hard one to top in the future.

Also, we are planning to return for the 150th, correct?

Schedule and comments regarding Kennesaw National Battlefield Park, June 27 - June 28, 2009:

Camping will be available behind the Visitor's Center on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Saturday, June 27:

8:30 AM: Weapons Inspection, NPS will issue cartridges and caps
9:30 AM: Infantry Demonstration
11:30 AM: Lunch provided by NPS
12:30 PM: Infantry Demonstration
3:30 PM: Infantry Demonstration
5:15 PM: Dinner provided by NPS

Sunday, June 28:

TBD: Weapons Inspection, NPS will issue cartridges and caps
10:00 AM: Infantry Demonstration
11:30 AM: Lunch provided by NPS
1:00 PM: Infantry Demonstration

Note: Artillery and Cavalry demonstrations will also be taking place at different times on both days.

To the members of the 125th,
As you probably already have heard, Linda and I have retired from cooking for the 125th. Linda has been doing it for 14 years and, I, not nearly as long. I wore the stripes but Linda was the brains of the operation. I would just like to take this time to thank everyone who has helped us over the years. I would especially like to say thanks to Kevin (Vidalia), Kristen, George, Maggie, Terry, Cassie, Scotty, Mike, Ian, Leigh Ann, Steve, The Johns(squared), the "Fire Gods", the members of the wood and water details and anyone else who peeled a potato, flipped a flap jack, stirred a pot, washed a pot, scrubbed a fry pan and those who kept us entertained while we were cooking. It was always a group effort and it couldn't have been accomplished without everyones' help. If I did not mention you by name, I apologize and I know as soon as I send this I will think of more people...don't take it personally, THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!
We started reenacting as a family (Linda, Zach and I) and as the years passed, we became members of an even larger family, the 125th OVI. You haven't seen the last of us (not a threat), we will be at future events when we can and look forward to sitting around the campfire again in the years to come. Thanks for making the last 15 years so rewarding.

Nash Farm June 13th

We will be having another work day at Nash Farm on Saturday, June 13, 2009 to continue to prepare for the up-coming Atlanta Campaign.

We will start at around 9:00AM and we need people to bring weed eaters, chainsaws, etc. that you may have available to clear brush and trees.

Dear Brave Comrades of the 125th:

Thank you very much for allowing Pearce Truesdale and me to fall in with y'all this weekend at Resaca. We had a blast! This marks the fourth time that I have fallen in with you all, and it was once again a pleasureable experience.

Don't forget: We need you with us a Fort McAllister this December! The Winter Muster Event (as it is called) will take place 11-13 December 2009 at Fort McAllister State Park in Richmond Hill, Georgia. We will be commemorating the 145th anniversary of the assault and capture of the fort (December 13th will be the acutual date). We need you there with us very much! Please let me know if you need more info by emailing me at my e-address listed on this post.

Preservation Donation

Gents,

After all is said and done, we will be making a donation of $830.00 to the Legacy Parks Foundation. The donation will be for the Urban Wilderness and Historic Corridor project. http://www.legacyparks.org/projects.html

The project includes the following areas.

Fort Stanley Ridge
A 22-acre wooded parcel off Chapman Highway containing the Civil War fort where Union troops from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio joined the 8th Tennessee and 16th Kentucky regiments to protect the southern approaches to Knoxville. This land also provides a key green backdrop that frames the cityside view of the south waterfront.

Fort Higley
A seven-acre parcel adjacent to Log Haven, a seven-acre parcel containing a critical portion of Fort Higley. During the 17-day Siege of Knoxville and the Battle of Fort Sanders, Fort Higley served as the western anchor of the Federal line, protecting the city from Confederate troops stationed on Cherokee Heights.

Fort Dickerson Park
An 85-acre scenic city park, said to be the best preserved of all earthworks forts dating from the Civil War days, now stands as evidence of the fort's role in defending Knoxville from Confederate General Longstreet's advance on the city.

Hope is that we will organize living history events at these sites in the future.
